The Biblical Backdrop (1 Samuel 22)

To understand the gospel context, you must first look at its Old Testament origin.

• David’s Exile: David had already been anointed by the prophet Samuel to be the future king of Israel. However, King Saul became murderously jealous, forcing David to flee for his life. He ended up isolated and hiding in a desolate limestone cave called Adullam (which translates loosely to "refuge" or "retreat").
