Rebecca Malope – Isikhalo | Gospel Audio

“Isikhalo” is a Nguni word (used in languages like Zulu and Xhosa) that means “a cry,” “a lament,” or “a deep plea.”

Isikhalo expresses a heartfelt cry to God. It represents:
  • A cry for help in times of trouble
  • A plea for mercy and forgiveness
  • A lament during pain or suffering
  • A deep spiritual longing for God’s presence
In worship songs, Isikhalo is often a sincere prayer rising from the depths of the heart similar to biblical cries found in the Book of Psalms, where David and others cry out to God in distress.

It reflects scriptures like:
“I cry out to the Lord with my voice…” (Psalm 142:1)
“Hear my cry, O God…” (Psalm 61:1)

Spiritual Meaning:
In gospel music, Isikhalo is not just a cry of sadness — it is a cry of faith, trusting that God hears and responds.
