MEANING
Ephphatha (also spelled Ephphata) comes from Aramaic meaning “Be opened.”and appears in the Gospel of Mark 7:34–35.
Jesus said it while healing a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment.
“He looked up to heaven and said to him, ‘Ephphatha,’ that is, ‘Be opened!’
Immediately the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.”
(Mark 7:34–35, NIV)
Ephphatha goes beyond physical healing and carries deep spiritual significance:
Opening of ears – ability to hear God’s voice and truth
Opening of the mouth – freedom to speak, testify, worship, and proclaim the gospel
Spiritual awakening – removal of spiritual blindness and deafness
Breakthrough – release from limitations, bondage, and silence
Worship & Gospel Music Context
When used in gospel songs or prayers, Ephphatha is a declaration asking Jesus to:
Open hearts to receive His Word
Open lives to divine healing and freedom
Open doors of favor, purpose, and destiny
Therefore Ephphatha means “Be opened”
It symbolizes Jesus’ power to heal, restore, and spiritually awaken people, enabling them to hear God clearly and speak boldly for His glory.
